The most common duck species in Latvia and Lithuania. An important hibernation place in Daugavpils is the Daugava near Šuņupe. The plumage of males and females is very different. They usually nest on the ground, by hiding the nest in the grass or in the bushes. They rarely nest also in tree cavities. Clutch includes 9 – 13 eggs. At the age of 7-8 weeks young birds become able to fly.
