Rare species inhabiting the shores of richly overgrown water bodies. Water rail’s lifestyle is very hidden and its plumage makes it almost invisible. In nature it can be more easily detected by pig-like cries. Small number regularly overwinter in the western and central part of Latvia. During the autumn migration, several dozen water rails stay in the Esplanade wetland.
