A rare species in Latvia and Lithuania, which is more common in the eastern part of the Latvia. Distribution in Lithuania is dispersive. Protected species, included into the Red data book of Lithuania. Characteristic for open or semi-open habitats and cultural landscapes. Resistant to anthropogenic influences, often breeds in man-made ponds, sometimes in fountain pools and building pits. Mating calls are audible from the end of April to the end of May, they are often confused with mole cricket trills. Small terrestrial invertebrates (beetles, diptera, spiders, etc.) in the feed.
