Marsh mosquito
Marsh mosquito
Marsh mosquito belongs to the mosquitoes family, in which 30 species are currently known in Latvia. Marsh mosquito is easily distinguished from other species by its grey body colour, variegated wings and special type of sitting with a highly raised abdomen. Marsh mosquito larvae breathe atmospheric air, so they can also live in heavily polluted waters and purify them by eating bacterial and fungal colonies, algae and unicellular organisms. Marsh mosquitoes winter in basements, caves and similar places.
