Esplanade wetland is a unique place, ensuring not only shelter for many rare and protected species, but it is also territory, which ensures local people with recreation, environmental cognitive and ecosystem services. Simply put, the Esplanade wetland is a place for nature and people. It’s all here, in the Esplanade wetland, in the city centre. For someone it is almost at the doorstep, for someone 5-10 minutes away, but still – here and now. There are not many cities in Latvia and not even in Europe that can be proud of black-headed gull colonies, European pond turtles, bluethroats, little bitterns and other animals in the city centre. It’s like a neighbourhood with homes, shops, recreation areas. The more diverse the offer, the more diverse its inhabitants. The offer of the Esplanade wetland or nature district consists of a pond, a reed bed, a grassland, shrubs and large trees. However, there are many other important components in each of these parts, which are significant to nature and us!
