Common water strider

Common water strider

The species is very common in Latvia and Lithuania, inhabits various waters – ponds, ditches and slow-flowing watercourses. It feeds as it moves across the water, using its hind legs as a corner. With its forefeet, the bug catches insects that have died or got on the surface of the water, their larvae, as well as other small aquatic animals and feed with them. In autumn, adults leave the water body and fly to hibernation sites. They overwinter in barns, basements, caves, cavities and other places.
